Dell, a leader in enterprise technology and solutions, has shared the latest results of its Global Data Protection Index (GDPI) focused on cyber resilience across multiple clouds. Released on Thursday, January 18, 2024, the report highlights troubling trends in data protection and underscores the critical need to strengthen security in an ever-changing digital world.
Emerging Challenges in Data Protection: Dell’s GDPI identifies an alarming increase in cyber threats, with 52% of respondents reporting an attack that prevented access to data in the past 12 months, the highest percentage in more than five years. The costs associated with these attacks have more than doubled since the last report, reflecting the significant monetary impact on organizations.
Prevention and Recovery Concerns: Despite growing concerns about the effectiveness of data protection measures, 59% of organizations are investing more in cyber prevention than cyber recovery. 75% fear that their current measures are not sufficient against ransomware threats, and 69% are not confident they can reliably recover from a destructive cyber attack.
Impact of Remote Working on Data Security: The report highlights that 81% of organizations feel that the increase in remote working, driven by the pandemic, has increased their exposure to data loss due to cyber attacks. This number is a significant increase from the 70% reported in previous research.
Insurance Policy Challenges: Although 93% of organizations use ransomware insurance policies, the report reveals significant limitations. Fifty-seven percent report that insurance providers require proof of implementation of best practices for cyber threat prevention, and 40% indicate that certain scenarios would void the policy. In addition, 40% highlight legal restrictions on payment to specific entities.
Proactive Organizational Response: In response to the growth of threats, organizations are strengthening their cyber resilience. 50% have incorporated professional services, 49% conduct regular cyber recovery testing, and 42% have implemented cyber vaults with physical and logical separation of production data.
Generative AI and Data Protection in Multiple Clouds: For the first time, the GDPI explored the impact of generative AI. 52% believe that generative AI will benefit cybersecurity, while 27% believe it will initially be advantageous to cybercriminals. The report highlights the need to consider the impact of generative AI on future data protection strategies.
Challenges in Multi-Cloud Environments: Although multi-cloud environments are preferred for deploying applications, 79% of respondents are not confident that their organization can protect all data in public clouds. Forty percent cite data security challenges in multi-cloud public environments.
Conclusion: In an environment threatened by cyber attacks, Dell highlights the critical need to chart a path to data protection. As organizations adopt public cloud solutions and experiment with generative AI, data protection becomes a more complex challenge. Dell Technologies offers solutions and services to strengthen security readiness and address these challenges.
